Update on U.S./Canada Border Crossing

02/01/2008

Update on U.S./Canada Border Crossing.

As of January 31, 2008, Canadian and U.S. citizens over 19 years of age crossing the border via land or sea will have to present a proper proof of identity. That includes:

  • a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license and a birth certificate or a citizenship card; or
  • a valid passport; or
  • a NEXUS card; or
  • an enhanced driver's license; or
  • a birth certificate only, for travelers 18 and under.

Verbal claims of citizenship and identity alone will no longer be sufficient to establish identity and citizenship for entry into the United States.

All travelers crossing the border by air must carry their valid passport, or a NEXUS card, if using a NEXUS kiosk. For more information, please visit Canada Border Services Agency, or U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
