For more than 27 years, Jim Baumgartner has worked with the firm on family owned and closely held businesses, employment law, Canadian matters and litigation. Jim previously served as the firm’s Managing Partner for four years.

Jim was on the Advisory Board for Oregon State University’s Austin Family Business Program and is a frequent lecturer on family owned business topics. Jim enjoys the unique interplay between family dynamics, wealth preservation, succession planning and the business life cycle. To help clients achieve their interrelated business, family, and estate planning goals, he assists with organizational and formation issues, offers advice on day-to-day operations, and participates in strategic and long-term succession planning.

Jim leads the firm’s employment practice, representing employers in all aspects of the employment relationship. His practice includes both employment counseling and litigation on a wide array of issues, including hiring, discipline, termination, compliance with state and federal laws, advice on wage and hour issues, and developing and enforcing workplace policies and practices.

Jim assists Canadian and U.S. companies doing business in the other’s country, including advice on business formation, border crossing, tax and related matters. His experience helps clients navigate internal issues and avoid pit-falls that can interfere with expansion on either side of the 49th parallel.

In 2005, the Government of Canada appointed Jim as an Honorary Consul to Canada. He regularly interacts with the Canadian Consulate in Seattle and represents the interests of Canada in maintaining and advancing relationships between Oregon and Canada.

In 2007, Oregon State University’s College of Business recognized Jim as an Outstanding Alumni Partner, an award given annually to non-alumni whose efforts benefit the College of Business. Jim was recognized for his outstanding contribution to family-business’s in Oregon and for his work on behalf of the Austin Family Business Program.
Jim also served as chairman of the Western Oregon University Foundation Board of Trustees. In 2014 Governor Kitzhaber appointed Jim to the State Board of Higher Education and also to the newly formed independent Board of Trustees for Western Oregon University, for which he currently serves as Chair.
